Chapter Eight

The shop door jingled as it closed behind Eimi. She quickly glanced around the shop trying to determine if this place actually had all the supplies they would need, as Galaxar claimed they would. The inside of the shop was much more up kept than the outside. The floor looked as if it swept regularly and there were no dust or cobwebs to be seen, as Eimi had been expecting. There were many shelves through out the store stocked with numerous items. Eimi was surprised to see that the shop had such a large variety, it had appeared the dragon was right about the place after all. She headed toward the counter trying to find this shop keep Galaxar had mentioned, but no one was in sight.

"Hello, is anyone here?" Eimi asked as she reached the counter.

"I'll be right with you," a voice replied. The voice was much softer and feminine that Eimi had imagined it would be. She no longer knew what to expect of the man who ran the place.

A few moments later a woman emerged from the doorway behind the counter. She had long blonde hair hanging loosely in pigtails. A woman was definitely not what Eimi was expecting. Perhaps Galaxar was wrong about the gender of the shop keep or this might be wife or daughter of the man. She assumed it made no difference one way or the other. She stopped in front of Eimi and smiled. "How many I help you?" she asked.

"I was looking for some camping supplies," Eimi told her.

"Going on a camping trip?" she asked as she walked from behind the counter towards a nearby shelf.

"No, just trying to avoid this knight guy," Eimi replied being way too open about the situation. "My pet upset him and so now we are going to hide out in the woods until he gives up and goes home."

"Hmm. Well it sounds like you are going to need enough supplies for a few days and enough for two."

Eimi nodded her head as she watched the blonde move around through the shelves grabbing several things from them as she went.

"I'm Eimi," she said with a smile as the woman walked back to the counter to empty her load before returning to the shelves for more supplies. "What's your name?"

She paused her actions for a moment looking over at the foolish cat-girl who was being rather reckless with her words. "I'm Calyn," replied before returning to her task at hand.

"Do you own this place?" Eimi asked sounding as if she was trying to start a conversation with the girl.

"No," Calyn told her. "I just work here."

"Why are you working here? Isn't it rather dangerous?" she replied as the girl returned to her place behind the counter and began calculating the cost of the items and packing them up.

She paused again as she nervously clutched a small blue stone hanging from a chain around her neck. She wondered why this cat-girl was being so indiscreet and talkative, which was so unlike most of the customers who shopped here. She didn't sense anything menacing about her, but just the fact she was so chatty made Calyn rather uneasy.

"I... I just know the owner," she stuttered. "I just arrived in town not long ago. The shop keep is an old family friend. He offered to let me stay here awhile. The neighborhood isn't the safest, but I don't leave the shop much."

"You don't live here?" Eimi inquired.

"I did when I was young," she replied, "but haven't been here in quite a long time."

"What brought you back?"

"I'm looking for a childhood friend," Calyn stated. "I haven't seen him since I moved away. I'm not even sure he lives here anymore." As she finished with what she had been doing, "That will be 80 gold pieces," she said quickly changing the topic.

Eimi dug into the leather coin purse. She swiftly produced the requested amount and placed it into Calyn's waiting hand. She then proceeded to the supplies she purchased. They were all neatly packed into a large backpack and a satchel. "I hope you find him," she told her as she walked out the door to the awaiting dragon outside.
